How Pedal Systems work (it’s complicated)

Ever wonder how pedals are designed? Let's take a look!
Our #GT6R project has required a lot of work over the years, but lately, we've been building completely bespoke pedals ... and who knew they would be so involved?!

Drive by cable throttle pedals need an appropriate ratio to actuate the throttle body fully, whereas drive by wire pedals can be programmed to have "curves" in the throttle map ... this is to make better use of the available power, prevent wheel slip, or improve fuel economy.

Clutch pedals need an adequate ratio to allow full actuation of the clutch pressure plate (so it will actually disengage). Calculating that requires some knowledge of your clutch system parts, and by multiplying the pedal ratio by the advantage at the release bearing we can determine the effort and stroke length needed from your foot.

Brake pedal ratios are the most involved and will require a detailed list of dimensions ranging from the caliper piston areas, to the size of the master cylinder, and even the weight distribution of the car. We found using this calculator tool to be most helpful: https://brakepower.com/

Hopefully you'll have learned something here today and maybe had a chuckle or two! Please keep in mind that this is only our approach to this series of challenges though, I may have made errors and it's by no means the only information you should base yourself on. As always, it's best to do your own research!

We’re just a couple of guys (not trained mechanics) who enjoy problem solving, creating new things, and showing you how we did it. We can’t promise that anything we do will work for your project, or that you, someone else, or your warranty will not be harmed or affected by doing it too. Please work responsibly and do not mess around with machinery that you are not comfortable with, even if we made it look easy!
