Azure regions are geographical areas where Azure data centers are located. Microsoft has established multiple regions around the world to provide customers with low-latency access to Azure services and to ensure data residency and compliance with local regulations. Each Azure region is made up of one or more data centers that are located within a specific geographic area.

Availability Zones, on the other hand, are unique physical locations within an Azure region. Availability Zones are essentially separate data centers that are interconnected through high-speed networking. The purpose of Availability Zones is to provide resiliency and high availability for applications and services deployed in Azure.

By deploying resources across multiple Availability Zones within a region, you can achieve fault tolerance and protect your applications and data against failures at the level of an individual data center. Azure ensures that each Availability Zone is physically separated and operates on independent power, cooling, and networking infrastructure. This separation helps to minimize the risk of a single event impacting multiple Availability Zones.

Azure offers a Service Level Agreement (SLA) for Virtual Machines, Storage, and Virtual Network, which guarantees 99.99% uptime when resources are deployed in multiple Availability Zones within a region. This high level of availability makes Azure a suitable choice for mission-critical applications and services.
