"I found the tune pretty quickly. It was a Pulherima Rosa of the fourteenth or fifteenth century, which I once heard on some Czech record. It was performed by an ancient music ensemble. It struck me then… I found the record first, and then the sheet music. Andrey liked the melody very much.
Then we decided on the tool. Tarkovsky recalled that once in Baku he listened to a tarist (tar is an ancient oriental instrument) who performed mughams — ritual melodies associated with the Koran. That master was called the Azerbaijani Bach. Played colossally! We called him to Moscow and let him listen to our melody, so that he would play something similar. But he didn't really"get it". In the end, it didn't make an impression, and I understood: we are going the wrong way — we understand the problem superficially, not deeply.
Then I took a small symphonic composition — a string group, flutes, "tree", and tar performed the accompaniment. Added various variations on the main theme. It sounded beautiful.
Gradually, the sound, even the visual image of the sitar, and later the vina, an Indian instrument that pulls a single bass note, began to appear in my mind more and more often. It is multi-stringed, and thanks to this, one chord rings, merges into a rich timbre, swirls ... Timbralally, this is a very interesting instrument that inclines to meditation, such a narcotic, because with a constant bass, its timbral structure constantly changes. And I understood: that's what you should do.
On the synthesizer, I created a sound very similar to the sound of guilt, constant and changing at the same time. We couldn't find the sitar in the Soviet Union. A pity. It has a long neck, and we can hear the vibration of the string, its waving. Then I took the improvisations of the Baku tarist, which he played in our studio,and made a sound editing. The tar has a very short string, so I decided to "lengthen" it by playing it in slow motion on a tape recorder. And the string immediately began to play, to sing.
