Intussusception is a challenging diagnosis to make and being able to take a history, elicit signs in the exam and choose the appropriate imaging is so important.

In this video I'm going to take you through intussusception and how I approach it as a pediatric surgeon.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the most recent video on intussusception...understanding what it is and why it happens definitely check that out!

When you take a history for intussusception the most common finding is progressive intermittent abdominal pain in a child under the age of five.

On physical exam you may see Dance's sign or emptiness in the right lower quadrant, you may have a "sausage shaped" abdominal mass or commonly you may have a completely benign abdomen.

The most sensitive imaging test to diagnose intussusception is ultrasound and cross sectional imaging should not be used as a first line diagnostic modality.
