CAIS is complete androgen insensitivity syndrome and occurs when the body is unable to respond to testosterone. Because the external genitalia in males are developed in response to dihydrotestoterone, a product of testosterone, the inability to respond to DHT results in these babies being born with female genitalia and assigned a female sex at birth.
