Qualcomm has become the latest technology business to announce that Microsoft's Windows 12 will be available in the coming months.
Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon hinted at a possible debut date when introducing the company's own future product, the Snapdragon X Elite, a new Arm-based CPU for PCs that aims to disrupt the laptop industry.
Windows 12 was not referred to by name. However, on an earnings call, Amon stated that the Snapdragon X Elite will be available in "mid-2024" when Microsoft releases the "next version of Windows."
“We're tracking to the launch of products with this chipset tied with the next version of Microsoft Windows that has a lot of the Windows AI capabilities. We're still maintaining the same date, which is driven by Windows, which is mid-2024, getting ready for back-to-school,” he said.
The mid-2024 date aligns with other rumors and news bits suggesting that a Windows 12 release is right around the corner. Last year, an Intel executive said: “We actually think '24 is going to be a pretty good year for client, in particular, because of the Windows refresh.”
Meanwhile, a December report from Taiwan's Commercial Times stated that PC manufacturers expect Windows 12 to be released in June of this year. If this is accurate, Windows 12 will be released less than three years after Windows 11, which was released in October 2025.
According to Qualcomm's CEO, Microsoft intends to include various AI-related capabilities powered by OpenAI in the upcoming release of Windows 12. Even if Microsoft does release a new Windows operating system, it is unlikely that users will adopt it right away. According to Statcounter, 66% of Windows users continue to use Windows 10, while only 27% have switched to Windows 11.
