A violent flood, the DANA, hit Valencia, Spain, on the night between October 29 and 30, with a provisional toll of about 222 victims, dozens missing and many residents stuck at home. In this video we analyze what happened, the meteorological causes behind the event and the meteorological phenomenon of the DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos), or “cold drop”, a bubble of cold air that triggered the extreme rainfall. We will see how the particularly warm Mediterranean Sea fueled the instability and the formation of intense storms, and we will discuss the role of climate change in increasing the risk of similar events.
