Against all odds, Rashid Shahriar made an extraordinary journey from Bangladesh to Nairobi.

On July 19,2024 in Bangladesh the internet had been cut off by the government; no access to savings accounts, no access to WhatsApp … and a nationwide curfew, the military and police empowered to “shoot on sight” anyone caught breaking it.

That didn’t stop Rashid Shahriar from getting to Nairobi, Kenya. He had a plane ticket, and a conference to attend — an honor he had earned: Students For Liberty’s Prometheus Fellowship Summit.

So, Rashid called his father who knew someone at a hospital. They found an ambulance … and a driver. It was all Rashid could devise to defy the curfew.

The ambulance took Rashid and his wife, who insisted on joining him, to the hospital for a fake prescription, then 192 kilometers to the capital, Dhaka — the only place it could be “filled.”

Rashid was in the back of an ambulance, clutching his wife’s hand in his left, the fake prescription in his right. In his luggage were 9 Cups of Ramen Noodles.

The ambulance ride to Dhaka took 5 hours. The next day, a ride to the airport took 5 minutes. His flight took him a world away … from his life, and his wife.

Rashid successfully made it to Kenya. From Nairobi, he flew to Dallas to begin a Master’s program. There, with Students For Liberty, he is making himself an even stronger advocate for freedom.

Fight with brave students like Rashid from all over the world. Fight, with SFL.
