"At the end of the century, we could be growing bananas in Michigan."
Dec. 2022 -- March 2023 was the 6th warmest winter recorded, going back to 1895. Warmer winters are affecting the survival of invasive forest pests like Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.
Deborah McCullough, PhD, forest entomologist at Michigan State University, presents a case study in Michigan that shows the danger warmer winters can have on the survival of the more than 173 million hemlock trees in Michigan, and explains that warmer winters may also affect wildlife, vector-borne diseases, outdoor recreation, tourism, roads and heating.
