During a filming visit to Cardiac Canyon near Page Arizona, we interviewed Navajo historian Paul Begay, and he revealed to us a moving and powerful story about the secret history of Cardiac Canyon, it's connection to the Long Walk, and it's importance to the Diné, the Navajo People.

Taking place during the American Civil War, the Navajo were forcibly removed from their ancestral homelands to Fort Sumner in the New Mexico Territory – a reservation called Bosque Redondo. Here, from 1864 to 1868, nearly 9,000 Navajo and Apache were held against their will in sub-human conditions. Over 2,500 perished from starvation and disease. In 1868, the U.S. government authorized General Sherman to negotiate a treaty with the Navajo and on June 1, the Navajo Treaty of 1868 was signed and the Navajo were allowed to return to their homeland. The treaty effectively established the Navajo Nation as a sovereign nation under Federal Law.
