Did you know the UK has rainforests? Explore Borrowdale in the Lake District with the National Trust
We probably know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the species that live in the temperate rainforest at Borrowdale in the Lake District. Just like the tropical rainforests you might find in the Amazon, Borrowdale rainforest is a rare and internationally important habitat.
Temperate rainforests usually occur on the west coast of the UK, where oceanic climates help to create unique habitats for nature. They’re different from most woodlands, as moisture and rainfall encourage distinctive species of lichen and bryophytes (such as liverworts, hornworts and mosses) to grow. The rainforest at Borrowdale, near Keswick, is a tiny fragment of a once gigantic forest that spanned the west coast of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
The rainforest is currently looked after by the National Trust. Learn about how a National Nature Reserve has been established to help protect the animals and plants. This includes connecting the remaining fragments of temperate rainforest and discovering more about the species that live there.
You’ll also learn about how we’re engaging local communities with our work and collaborating with National Trust tenant farmers, who are helping to create green corridors for wildlife by planting orchard woodlands and hedgerows.
