Our first release of 2013 comes from Funkdamentalist, the alias of D.C.-based Bilal Arshad. His roots approach to house music has been seen releases on labels like i Records and Something Different. "One" is ignited by tight percussion that punches deep and precise. Polished Rhodes chords float amongst sparkling hats and snares while the dub reggae bassline cracks the surface like distant sawtooth thunder. The soulful spoken vocal builds in energy as it is orbited by the exchange of animation between bass and harmony. "One" unites the dancefloor in energy and vibe.

Mark Graham's Late Night Elegance Mix immediately drives "One" into deeper waters. Mark strips away granular sheets of sound to isolate empty spaces punctuated with delay and echo. Pulsations expand the atmosphere to underscore the vocals from the original. Mark Graham comes to us from Middlesbrough, UK where he manages Luna Records and Contrast Wax.

Al Bradley's 3am Deep Remix of "One" introduces kicks that are bigger and lower. The syncopation of Al's twisting drums immediately trigger a compulsive after-hours groove that is both physical and mental. Strings illuminate the journey into darkness and abstraction while the original's vocal hook keeps it rooted. Al Bradley's heritage in house music ranges from his Manchester roots to his DJ bookings in the UK, Spain and US. Al has released cutting edge dance music on labels like Paper Recordings, Baker Street, TUG Underground and his own 3am Recordings.
