Director and Digital Disruptor Yuen Hsieh kicks off NOWNESS Asia’s 2023 Experiments season by addressing our burning questions about life after death and technological dystopias in a post-human world.
What happens to our data when we die? Our digital identities - contained within binary codes, compressed and transferred through increasingly complex data networks - seem to have afterlives of their own. In his latest speculative fiction video project, Yuen Hsieh creates a universe where digital afterlife innovation promises a digital utopia where immortality is no longer elusive.
People scramble to “upgrade” their data to the Digital Afterlife Agency (D.A.G.), an all-powerful corporation which eventually begins to “own” its customers’ data. In the process, people gradually lose control of themselves.
Digital Afterlife Agency is an origin story which exposes the insidious processes at the heart of purported digital utopias where people are free to choose who and what they want to be and, paradoxically, embody their most cherished dreams through disembodiment...
