In January 2020 the US successfully a******ed Quasem Soleimani, the second most powerful figure in Iran. This forced Iran to retaliate. Luckily in our timeline their counterstrike was limited, allowing for the tensions to quiet down. However that could’ve been very different if their retaliation was slightly more agressive. The US and Iran could’ve easily found themselves in an unstoppable spiral of escalation, leading to an all out war.
