Guan Yu is an interesting character, in that he is great for beginners, but on higher difficulties he is just bad. At base, Guan Yu has high HP, Attack and Defense, his moveset has wide swings, but also good at single target, but that doesn't solve a glaring weakness with him. The main problem with Guan Yu is that he is SLOW. As the game goes on, and enemies catch up in stats and become more aggressive, you'll find that Guan Yu lacks that power he once had, and he can't attack in time before he gets interrupted, resulting in him gradually getting chipped down in HP.

As the series went on, they improved him bit by bit to cover these weaknesses, with the weaknesses being less apparent by the time of DW5 when the games become easier. He's not a bad character. He's just... slow.

Now as for the stage itself. Guan Du is a nightmare, as it should be. Guan Du Castle will already be under attack, and Yuan Shao just does not relent, so it will be under attack constantly and you will have to decide when it's time to go back to help Cao Cao and when to try and take down Wuchao. Which, doesn't really matter in this game, as it only effects Yuan Shao's morale, and when you have Yuan Shang there doing the work, it's not going to stop their attack at all.

What you want to do though is to take down Yan Liang and Wen Chou so Liu Yan will leave the fort and help Cao Cao.

There is an interesting phenomenon here, where the Gate Captains will leave their position and advance to the front line. It was a massive help. Gate Captains in DW2 and DW3 are treated as officers, so they are able to recover HP, and them having good stats help a lot too.
