If you never want to lose data again, then you need to know The 3-2-1 Rule of data backups.
In the backup and disaster recovery industry, the 3-2-1 Rule is often referred to as the Golden Rule, the king of all data backup best practices. The 3-2-1 Rule says that in order to avoid data loss, you need to maintain:
3 copies of all important data, on at least
2 different types of storage media, with at least
1 copy stored offsite and off-network.
The reason you need to keep so many copies and store them in so many different locations is that the greater diversity and redundancy you build into how you store your data, the less likely it is that any disaster event can wipe out all copies of your data.
There are many data backup best practices I could share, and maybe I'll do a video series on them soon (comment below if you think I should), but the 321 rule is by far the simplest and easiest to implement.
If you do nothing else after watching this video, please do an inventory of your backups, and make sure you're adhering to the 3-2-1 rule for everything important.
𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝟯 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀?
I get this question a lot. The reason is that no IT system or data storage is completely infallible. Hard drives crash, ransomware encrypts data, and natural disasters do happen. Instead of the next lightning strike or phishing email bringing your business to its knees, if you follow data backup best practices, the 3-2-1 rule just might save you.
𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗹𝗲.
Maintaining multiple sets of backups doesn't need to break the bank. The first copy of data is your live production copy. The one on your computer that you use every day. The second copy (your 1st backup copy), can be stored on a local USB drive. For $100, you can get a decent sized external USB SSD drive, or an even larger non-SSD drive.
The 3rd copy (your 2nd backup) usually does come at a cost, because you're going to be paying someone else like a cloud provider to store it for you. But the offsite and off-network nature of this copy means that it's also the most valuable, because it is the one that is least likely to be affected by any issues.
If you have any questions on data backup best practices, the 3-2-1 rule, or anything else related to data protection, I'm here for you. You can always find me at http://meetcathy.com
