Books Unbanned is an initiative started by the Brooklyn Public Library aimed at combating book censorship in some parts of the country. The initiative makes their entire collection available digitally to any young person in the country under 18.
Since launching this program, four other libraries have followed suit, including the Seattle Public Library.
The Brooklyn and Seattle public libraries stated that while some students were drawn to sign up because they didn’t have access to a nearby library, others signed up because certain book titles they were seeking were censored in their area.
