Omkareshwar is located in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. It is situated on an island called Mandhata in the middle of Narmada river. This is the fourth Jyotirlinga among the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Centuries ago, the Bhil tribe settled at this place and now this place is famous for its grandeur and history. Word Omkar first uttered from mouth of the Creator, Vedas cannot be recited without its pronunciation. The physical manifestation of this Omkar is Omkar Kshetra. There are 68 pilgrimages in it. 33 crore gods reside here along with their families.
Omkareshwar is the best pilgrimage place in the Narmada region. It is believed in the scriptures that even if a pilgrim does all the pilgrimages in the country, unless he comes to Omkareshwar and brings water from the pilgrimages he has done and does not offer it here; all his pilgrimages are considered incomplete. Along with Omkareshwar Tirtha, Narmada river also has a special significance. According to the scriptures, the results of bathing in river Yamuna for 15 days and bathing in river Ganga for 7 days are given by just seeing Narmada river. Nearest major railway station to reach Omkareshwar is Indore. The nearest major airport is Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore. Indore to Omkareshwar is 80km by road.
