The Making Music Up in Lights project aims to showcase the brilliant variety of music our 3,500 member groups have continued making across the UK, even in the face of a pandemic. Formed of 190,000 hobby musicians, our groups perform diverse genres and styles of music at all levels of experience – each music maker’s unique background contributes to the rich tapestry of the leisure-time music sector.

Our sixth spotlight falls on Woodley Concert Band from Berkshire, who pay tribute to pop royalty with a timeless presentation of ABBA's 'Thank You for the Music'!

Watch their instrumental arrangement above and let us know if it gets you feeling nostalgic in the comments section below – if they lift your spirit, hit the Like button and subscribe to our channel so you don’t miss the next instalment!

About Woodley Concert Band:
Woodley Concert Band is an award-winning, welcoming and active community wind band based near Reading in Berkshire. The band was founded in 1974 when a small group of local musicians met to take an evening class at a local college and decided they wanted to continue playing together when the course finished. Nearly 50 years later, now with around 40 members and under the musical directorship of Claire Lawrence, Woodley Concert Band is thriving! Still mainly composed of amateur musicians, the band has grown in ability, size and ambition but always with the same aim: to entertain audiences with a wide variety of music and provide the players with opportunities to extend their repertoire and skills. Before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the band was giving around 20 performances a year, often in support of local charities and events and had secured a placed in the NCBF national finals following a platinum award in the regional event. Over the last year the band has continued to meet regularly, albeit virtually ,for weekly social events and rehearsals and has produced a series of 25 full band and small group virtual recordings, including this one, which cumulatively have been viewed over 89,000 times!
