“Mau” in Māori means “to wear.” The whakaaro (concept) behind Mau is about seeing the stunning taonga (treasures) we wear. Another aspect is an acknowledgement that Māori have been made to wear over time: near loss of language, culture and land, negative statistics, the list goes on. This collection has taonga that have been woven together using traditional Māori weaving techniques, their stories and our people.
