Using our home made furnace - this time we are melting brass :D It was a success as you can see the molten metal pooring into that cast iron crucible.
Next project will be more interesting and we will try to cast some molds and make something out of this metal and also we will melt copper.
After a little bit of research over the internet and checking other videos on Youtube for making a metal foundry, I found that I could buy refractory materials for stoves from any local Hardware store.
From start to the moment we started the furnace 2 days passed because I decided to use mostly dry materials and only a thin layer of plaster on top.
As fuel I'm using charcoal briquettes that usually burn at 400 ºC and can reach over 1000ºC with some extra oxygen trough a blower.
On our first attempt we succeeded to melt aluminum and this won't be all, stay tuned for part to when we will try to melt brass which has a higher melting point.
WARNING!
Burning charcoal in a foundry can reach temperatures over 1000ºC, which means that it should be always supervised and it should not be used indoors or by children. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training and always with proper protective safety gear, and also in a safety area far from any buildings or other flammable materials. The sparks flying from the foundry can start fires, and the fumes may be toxic. If you want to start a project like this proceed with caution and use common sense. Be advised that using the content of this video will be at your own risk.
