Hey everyone... here's my advice in under 10 minutes, for how to bounce back. I got scammed around October of 2022 and made a warning video. Today I got a message from David (Australia) and sadly, he was also a victim of this scam. Here are some ideas for you, and some of these I did not mention in the video.
STEPS YOU CAN TAKE -
#1) Do not hire a recovery service. They cannot help you get back crypto that you lost. Crypto is sent one-way, and after it is in the scammer's account, the only way to get it back is if you can convince them to send it back to you.
Also, this should be obvious, but remember to update your account passwords (if you revealed them to the scammer, or if they had a "packet sniffer" and they were able to lurk on your phone -- this happens if you tapped on a suspicious link and your phone or computer started acting strange). I updated my passwords on every single bank account or trading platform that I was using.
#2) Do not beat yourself up. Forgiving the scammer may seem impossible, but letting go of that is one of the best things you can do. A psychological survey was done with the most financially successful people in the world. The one thing they all had in common, was the ability to forgive. Examples: forgiving a spouse who divorced them and took half of everything, forgiving a business partner who back-stabbed them, etc.
Life is a classroom, not a courtroom. If you cannot forgive the scammer -- understandably so -- at least forgive yourself.
#3) Avoid thoughts of self-harm. You'll want to think dark thoughts. Just realize, your life is worth more than what you lost, right? I lost about $24,000 ... so would I sell myself -- my life -- for $24K and just end it all over that "small" amount? No, of course not.
#4) Focus on what you can do, and what you have to work with. In my case, I can double down on what is working, my business and cashflow from my vacation rentals. Maybe you can get extra hours at your job, maybe you can double-down (or 10x like Grant Cardone) and do one more phone call, see one more client, make one more sale, etc.
You should also guard yourself better for future business connections, even with people whom you trust are non-scammers. Get everything in writing when doing a business deal. Make sure both parties are clear about what you're doing and what you're getting.
#5) Don't be afraid to let your close friends know what happened, so they know what you're going through. True friends will be on your side. Many of my friends sympathized with me. Only one person (a business mentor) was kind of rude and said "What?! That was sooo stupid!" but alas, he wasn't wrong! Another one of my business mentors was much more understanding.
#6) Your brain needs dopamine. I strongly recommend pumping some positive mindset stuff into your brain, mostly via video (also with books). I started listening to Ed Mylett, Dr Joe Dispenza, Dr Wayne Dyer, Sadhguru, Tony Robbins, to get my mindset of achievement back in place. I started re-reading "Think & Grow Rich" (N.Hill) and "The Power of One More" (E.Mylett).
#7) Consider the tax breaks that your country of residence might allow. Sometimes you can tax deduct stolen funds as "losses". In my case, because I file as "Self-Employed" or (S-Corp) I just took a massive loss and paid almost no taxes to the IRS in the year the theft occurred.
#8) Consider the life lesson and be wary of other scammers, but also put your scammer on BLAST! Post their images and likeness on social media. If you take screenshots and send them back to the scammer, just maybe you'll put some fear into them, but I doubt it. They seem relentless. The best thing is to warn others.
#9) If you want to continue investing, set your goals/standards and stick to them (such as 10% of your income going into stocks/crypto etc). Don't feel like you're going to hit a rocket and just suddenly bounce back. I felt this way for a while, like the universe "owed me" a sudden windfall to balance out what I lost. That never happened, rather, I simply had to lick my wounds and work on my mindset.
#10) Pray. Maybe this isn't for you, but I tapped into my subconscious mind and realized how important it was to love myself, and be kind to myself (and others). Don't let the negative vibes get you. Don't let them ooze out onto others or your social relationships. I get it. You'll feel like strangling to death the next shady person you meet, who acts even slightly dishonest. Trust that God (or the divine, universe, etc) is keeping tabs and has a sense of justice, even if it's delayed.
