SOUND MUSEUM ONLINE: DUO FATALE (Switzerland) & Roman Stolyar
The saxophone- and bass clarinet player JOPO and his wife, the accordion-player and vocalist Ingeborg Poffet, founded Duo Fatale in 1989. Both are composers, living in Basel. Souldrifting-music they call their own style, that lives from their own compositions and the improvisation as a main substitute. Their music shows a modern accordion, that doesn’t climb to common stereotypes like tango or musette, but in a contemporary and risky way it leads the dialog with the saxophon to an orchestral sound. The vocal work of the Duo touches the Avantgarde as well as ethnological deapness. In most programs they include electronics as well as computer-music.
Educated both as jazz pianist and contemporary composer, Roman Stolyar melts various styles and genres in his playing – from ancient polyphony to modern counterpoints and clusters. One of key figures in Russian improvised music, he has performed in 26 countries collaborating with a number of internationally renowned improvisers, including Dominic Duval, William Parker, Vinny Golya, Thomas Buckner, Weasel Walter, Assif Tsahar, Martin Kuchen, Glen Hall, and many others. His improvisational workshops have garnered him an international reputation, and have led to many invitations to create and implement workshops for organizations and universities around the world, including the University of Michigan, Mannes College NY, the California Institute of the Arts, Music Academy Basel, Chateu d’Oex Music School in Switzerland, Frescobaldi State Conservatory in Ferrara, Italy and the Versailles Conservatory, France. He is an author on the first Russian book on teaching free improvisation - “Modern Improvisation: A Practical Guide for Piano”. He is a member of Russian Composers Union and International Association of Schools of Jazz and an Advisory Board member of the International Society for Improvised Music.
