For any given selection of stroke length, there is a maximum recommended pumping speed. If this speed is exceeded, the rod string is likely to “float” or go into compression on the downstroke.

Rod pumping systems that run too fast or have excessive downhole friction due to deviation, paraffin, heavy oil, scale, pump-off in a shallow well, or combination of these factors, may have “Rod Float Problems”, i.e. polished rod separation from the carrier bar.
