Part 7 of this short series discussing color temperature of flames.
This time it's fire vs. salt. The melting temperature of salt (NaCl) is 800º C. We saw that with glass, the stress of heating it on one side caused a violent explosion due to thermal stress. This block of salt is not a single crystal. Rather, it appears to be compressed from smaller crystals. It wasn't clear how this one was going to turn out.
