On 7 May 1988, Michael Gambon was filmed and interviewed while rehearsing Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya at the Vaudeville Theatre on the Strand. Acting alongside fellow legends of the stage and screen Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce, Gambon performed a segment for ITN's Stephen Phillips in his role as the play's eponymous character. Backstage, Gambon reflected on his illustrious career, telling ITN's Stephen Phillips that, from his beginnings performing alongside Sir Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic, he had always felt "covered in luck and good fortune". That was nearly twenty years before his performance as Professor Dumbledore in the Harry Potter franchise would propell him to a new level of global fame.

Fellow actors and colleagues of the theatre and film industries are paying tribute to Sir Michael Gambon after it was announced today that the acclaimed actor has died aged 82.
