For some male spiders, love is all-consuming. Females of many spider species eat their mates after procreation. But thanks to energy stored in their front legs, the males of a species of orb-weaving spiders can catapult themselves off of a ravenous mate in a split second. They launch themselves at a speed of nearly three feet per second and spin hundreds of times. That would be like a 6-foot-tall man leaping 1,700 feet up in a single second.
