How we know that elephants use names for each other

Researchers used machine learning to analyze over 400 rumbles made by female wild African elephants and discovered that they have specific vocal labels to identify one another, an original sound akin to a name. That makes elephants the only nonhuman animals to use names, building on our understanding of them as smart and social creatures.
