DeepSeek's assertion that its R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model was developed at a fraction of the price of its competitors has sparked concerns about the industry's future and led to a decline in the value of some of the largest businesses in the world.

With over 100 million users in only two months, ChatGPT became the fastest-growing consumer software product in history by January 2023. It also helped to boost OpenAI's current worth of $86 billion. Following the launching of ChatGPT, rival products such as Gemini, Claude, Llama, Ernie, and Grok were released. Copilot was first introduced by Microsoft and was based on OpenAI's GPT-4. ChatGPT was incorporated into Apple operating systems' Apple Intelligence feature as part of a cooperation between Apple Inc. and OpenAI that was announced in May 2024.

Within a week of its release, DeepSeek has risen to the top of the US app download charts.
