Climate shapes landscapes by how much precipitation there is to erode rocks and carry sediments downhill in rivers. Researchers used a computer model to study how changes in precipitation relates to the thicknesses of sediment terraces left by rivers at the outlets of mountains. The work can be used to better understand how rivers might respond to climate changes. It can also be used the other way around to learn about past climatic variations from river deposits.
