When trying to introduce beginners to Linux, many try introducing them to the terminal. In my honest opinion, I think this is a mistake and here is why I think it is. The terminal is no longer the only way to do basic system management on Linux aswell as installation of packages/apps, etc as Desktop Environments such as KDE and GNOME aswell as distributions such as Ubuntu and openSUSE have made very good replacements for terminal utilities that can be used by anyone without needing to pop open a terminal.
