I was in the keys recently and saw an air bubble system for the purpose of clearing the water and creating surface agitation to keep seaweed and other floating debris out of canal systems. I’ve never seen this application and decided to research the parts and eventually put two in my canal under my boats. The parts consist an air pump rated for high volume depth and distance, and continuous duty. These are popular for freshwater ponds, or water features at hotels and resorts. The air diffuser base is a stainless steel product, which is evidently used in the solar industry. And the diffuser itself is a rubber hose, which looks very much like a weeping style irrigation hose.

The power consumption is the equivalent of running a 100 W lightbulb continuously.

Altogether each system cost about $400 depending on the hose length. I used two different types of hoses. A three-quarter inch weighted sinking hose for the length that is underwater and then at the transition from bottom to going up the piling, I changed to a regular three-quarter inch fuel line that is much thinner in external diameter.

The cost breaks down to about $150 for the pump $150 for the diffuser and about $50 in hose.

I’ll show you all of this in this video. Hope you enjoy it!
