This is the first step in a series of videos that will walk you through everything you need to know to start live streaming like a pro.
In part 1, I introduce the variety of options and equipment available for improving your audio and video signals and I show you how it all connects together.
Topics/Chapters:
00:16 - Connecting a webcam and starting Facebook Live
01:45 - Improve your audio with an audio interface or USB mixer
03:27 - Let's setup the band!
05:07 - Upgrade to 2 webcams using OBS.
08-26 - Upgrade your Live Stream video quality by using an HD camera or DSLR and a Video capture converter.
11:51 - Add a video switcher and multiple HD cameras.
Terminology and Technology you need to Get Connected
Webcam: A webcam is a video camera that feeds or streams an image or video in real time to or through a computer network, such as the Internet. Webcams are typically small cameras that sit on a desk, attach to a user's monitor,(or are built into your computer.) Webcams connect to your computer via a USB cable.
Audio Interface Presonus Studio 24c, or Mackie ProFX10v3: An audio interface is an external computer hardware device that allows the input and output of audio signals to and from your computer. In this video I discuss two audio interface options, the Presonus Studio 24c, and the Mackie ProFX10v3. There are many other devices on the market to chose from.
What is OBS? OBS (Open Broadcast Software) is a free software program that you install on your computer. OBS can mix multiple cameras or materials (think graphics and media) and output it virtually into Facebook live (OBS calls this a virtual camera out). This approach allows you to produce a "show" with multiple camera angles and graphics and feed that into any live streaming or video conferencing platform (Facebook Live, Youtube, Zoom, MS Teams etc).
DSLR camera: A digital single lens reflex or DSLR is a camera with interchangeable lenses and a mirror that directs light from the lens to the viewfinder, which enables the user to see exactly what the lens sees, resulting in a more true-to-life image. In effect, is a fairly affordable camera that can take photos but can also produce excellent HD (high definition) video signals. Be sure that your DSLR camera of choice is free of embedded video indicators (such as clock, battery life and other indicators/information.) If the output of the HDMI is "not clean of this cha cha" then you will not be able to use it for live streaming. The Canon 80D, for example, does not have a "clean" HDMI output.
Video Capture/Converters (Foscomax) : A DLSR camera or HD Camcorder (like the Canon XA15 in my video) do not normally have USB outputs that will be recognized by computers as video signals (some are starting to provide this functionality). In most cases, you will need some sort of video converter or capture device. In this video I use the Foscomax Video capture device to convert an HDMI output from a video camera into a USB that can plug into your computer of choice and the signal is recognized as if it was a webcam (but with greatly improved quality).
