Welcome back to my channel yall. Today we are going to talk about a topic near and dear to my heart:chemicals in plastic. AKA. My phd research. We should be concerned about chemicals in plastic for a number of reasons. Plastic additives are typically monomers of the polymer structures or compounds added within the processing and formation of the plastic to enhance the aesthetics, functionality and longevity of the polymer. Additives can be released due to different environmental conditions inside and outside the plastic that influence its release. The rate of release will depend on the physical chemical properties of the polymer and the individual additive in question. Chemical hazards: To date, over 4,000 identified chemicals are associated to plastic packaging (Groh et al., 2019). Because of insufficient research on each of these individual chemicals, only 246 have been identified as an environmental and/or human health hazard(Groh et al., 2019). Ways to mitigate would be to limit purchasing and use of plastics (especially single use plastic), thoroughly wash plastic products before use, and don’t put hot food or drinks in plastic containers.
