The collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I led to the 1920 Sevres Agreement, which aimed to dismantle the empire and redistribute its territories. Although the Sevres Agreement was never fully ratified, it triggered the Turkish War of Independence, which led to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey and the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923, which defined Turkey's modern borders and stabilized the region.
