Israeli Incursion | Lebanon 1982
Inspired by GI Joe Productions' "October War" video
On June 6 1982, the Israel Defense Forces, under orders from then Defense Minister Ariel Sharon, crossed the Israel-Lebanon border. Dubbed "Operation Peace for Galilee", the operation was initially supposed to uproot Palestine Liberation Organization forces from Lebanon, with whom Israel had been fighting on-and-off. The invasion is generally regarded as a tactical victory but strategic defeat for Israel, as it forced Israel to involve itself in the affairs of Lebanon which was, at that time, in a chaotic and brutal civil war.
Israeli public opinion quickly turned against the war, especially after the Sabra-Shatila massacres, of which Israel had aided the perpetrators, and later the collapse of the Maronite-Israeli alliance.
By 1985, Israeli control over Lebanon was reduced to an occupation zone in the South, which would also collapse after the South Lebanon conflict.
