Dearborn, Michigan - Video has been released of the December 18, 2022 shooting at the police headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan. On this day, civilians were dropping off Christmas presents for Toys for Tots.
Ali Naji, 33, of Dearborn, walked into the police station, pulled out a gun and tried to fire at an officer behind a desk. However, the firearm malfunctioned, allowing the officer to reach for a gun and shoot Naji.
The officer fired 17 rounds in 4.5 seconds, killing the gunman.
It's unknown what motivated Naji, a barber with a history of mental health problems. His family has filed a lawsuit against the Dearborn Police Department, alleging the officer fired recklessly.
On March 16, 2023, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced that no charges will be filed against the officer. "It is clear from the facts and evidence in the case that the officer acted in lawful self-defense and defense of others," the prosecutor said.
