It's been a long time since Indian car brand Mahindra launched an all-new model in Australia, but the 2023 Mahindra Scorpio is finally here. It's an adventure-focused 'large' SUV that's zeroing in on the new Ford Everest, updated Isuzu MU-X and soon-to-be-replaced Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
So that it can be taken seriously, the six-seat Scorpio has a tough body-on-frame, ladder-frame chassis and a versatile four-wheel-drive (4WD) system that should imbue it with genuine off-road chops. And these off-road credentials are helped by its 129kW/400Nm turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine.
But as CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Andrew Chesterton finds out in this expert review, the Scorpion 4x4 is missing one key safety feature that you'd expect to be in any all-new model launched in Australia in 2023. And its absence could be a dealbreaker for some buyers.
