Are teachers giving too much homework? The truth is, most homework is a waste of time and most homework is not necessary. So I say absolutely yes, teachers give too much homework!
In a K-12 setting, where you're in school for 35 hours per week, the best answer to the question "Why do teachers give so much homework?" is simply that both teachers and students are poor at time management! It's for this reason that high school students are assigned an average of 3.5 hours of homework PER NIGHT! That's 17 hours per week! 35 hours in school, plus 17 hours of homework, equals 52 hours of work! And I thought child labor laws were supposed to prevent kids from working overtime in factories! How much homework should students get then? In my opinion, as close to "none" as possible.
The type of homework that I see assigned (at least in a high school setting) is mindless busywork or just work that kids ran out of time for in class. It's insane to me that, class-by-class, a teacher is unable to get through material in 90 minute classes 5 days a week. That's plenty of time to learn something as long as time is used wisely.
In a college setting, however, where class only meets twice a week for 90 minutes at a time, homework is important and homework is good for students. In fact, I wouldn't call it "homework" in college. Instead, I'd just call it "work," because almost all of your learning in college should come outside of class during your own study time. The class meetings are more for solidifying the information you learned on your own outside of class.
The big take away here is that teachers are giving too much homework. If students don't care about the material in school, then why would they spend 4 more hours after school to DO MORE SCHOOL?! Structure classes so all the work can be done during school hours and everyone will be much happier for it. I feel like the thing homework does well is lowering the grades of those kids who know it's bogus and choose not to do it!
Homework is a waste of time, homework is not necessary, and teachers assign too much work (if you can call cut-and-paste activities "work"). Homework sucks and it's time to stop!

School is a Joke. Don't be the punchline. The goal of CapOhTV is to point out why school is not important and why every person needs to take responsibility for his or her own education. (And it's not CapoTV. It's not Capo TV. And it's definitely not Capoh TV. It's CAPOHTV!)
