Carbon Down Under, a team of graduate students from the University of Southern Illinois - Carbondale, is liquifying and burying carbon dioxide to fight climate change.
Plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide - and it is still captured and stored within human-created waste of that plant material. Using a process called Oxidative Hydrothermal Dissolution (OHD), Carbon Down Under is able to convert that plant waste into a water-soluble liquid. This allows for long-term storage deep within the Earth, while also providing a potential nutrient source for essential microbial life.

XPRIZE has launched its XPRIZE Carbon Removal indie film showcase – a series of short films following XPRIZE Carbon Removal teams and their efforts to pull carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere and oceans and sequester it durably and sustainably.
Every week, we’ll host exclusive Discord watch parties for those in our community to see the films before they premiere on the XPRIZE YouTube channel the following day.
Be sure to join the conversation on Discord at discord.gg/xprize and get ready to learn more about the impact these teams are making.
These videos were produced by independent film-makers through Glimmer to showcase the diversity of teams and solutions in the competition. This series does not serve as an endorsement of any specific team or their XPRIZE entry.
