I originally wanted to start this video with history to the lead-up of World War I, but history is sooooo boring, what is this, high school?:

You likely know the most direct cause of World War I — the assassination of Francis F_rdinand — but do you know why it happened? And do you know why it led to a world war and not a localized one?

Well, Ferdinand was killed by the Black Hand, a group of Serbian nationalists. Inspired by the unification of _ermany a few decades earlier, Serbians sought to bring all their people together into one nation. The problem was that not all Serbians lived in Serbia; due to treaties and war, the borders fragmented their people into several neighboring nations, including that of the Austro-Hun_arian Empire.

So Serbian extremists violently pressured Austria-Hungary into giving them their land, including assassinating the empire’s archduke, Francis Ferdinand. Austria-Hungary now felt they needed to show a display of force to discourage more attacks. Within a _onth this escalated into a declaration of war.

So that explains the conflict between Serbia and Austria-Hungary, but why did it become a World War? Well that’s more a result of trends that had been going on in the last century, ones of colonization, imperialism, globalization, and _lliances. In order to discourage war from Russia, Germany’s Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, in 1879, formed a pact with Austria-Hungary that if one of them was attacked, the other would help. The idea was that Russia could take on one of them, but not both.

Eventually Italy got in on this too, and this became the Triple Alliance. The other countries of Europe now wanted a pact of their own, so France, Russia, and the UK created the Triple E_tente. Russia was also allied to Serbia as well. With this, you can spot the problem: with Austria-Hungary on one side of these alliances and Serbia on the other, all the greatest powers of Europe were roped into the conflict when one side declared war.

And thus began the Great War.
