Over three hundred and fifty million years ago, in the Late Devonian Period, the world was a very different place. Our planet was very much one composed primarily of water, wrapped, for the most part, in the mighty Panthalassic Ocean that engulfed Earth's comparatively small continents and islands. Life on land would have seemed truly alien to a person from the twenty first century, dominated mainly by spiralling forests of horsetails and ferns. Large insects would have hummed throughout the trees in a world eerily void of birds and pterosaurs. On land, the first semi aquatic tetrapods - strange amphibian like creatures - were beginning to take steps onto land, crawling out of freshwater streams to feed at the water's edge.
