First issued to US Air Force servicemen during the 1950s, the Type L-2B (along with its cold-weather counterpart, the MA-1) was originally designed as a lightweight alternative to the bulky leather flight jackets of World War II. By utilising nylon—a revolutionary new material at the time—and stripping away non-essential pockets and heavy insulation, its sleek design offered pilots greater comfort and manoeuvrability in the cockpit, while protecting against the elements when outside it.

However, as with many military jacket designs, function soon became fashionable. In the years that followed, these lightweight bombers were adopted by various youth subcultures—notably within the Japanese ‘Amekaji’ scene and British punk movement—gradually permeating mainstream fashion, where it remains a staple to this day.
