So I’ve had a think and compiled a list of the 3 best things that can speed up your understanding of the sport and speed up your progression.
Number 1.)
Sparring. Preferably with a safe partner. So something that rapidly increased my student Wez Tully, who’s an active competitor in amateur MMA, development in the sport was sparring, but more so sparring with me. I could basically nurture wez through sparring and constantly increase and reduce difficulty so he would begin to understand movement patterns and sequences. Go and watch the sitjaphoa brothers and see how they train/spar.
Number 2.)
Watch fights. Then watch educational content surrounding fights like this channel to give more context and understanding to whats happening. I also highly recommend Jack slack, his breakdowns and podcast are brilliant. Sylvie ittu has loads of great resources on her youtube and patreon surrounding muay thai, she has basically trained with all the legends from the golden era and broken down the 121s with them and put them on her patreon. They’re brilliant and I’ve picked up some great bits of knowledge from these sessions. If your grappling go have anything with Jon Danaher as his explanation is brilliant and he breaks things down in minute detail. All the baby steps and fundamentals.
Number 3.)
Combine number 1 and 2. Watch a fighter, pick something about him/her that you like, try it out in sparring to get the context of how to apply it.
Let me know if any of this helped in the comments and enjoy your 2024 combat sports journey! Oss!
