The RAF conducted a low level attack codenamed 'Carthage' on the Shell House (Gestapo HQ) in Copenhagen on this day 21st March 1945.
During the raid, a Mosquito flying in the first wave struck a tall lamp post, damaging its wing, causing it to crash into a nearby Catholic school. The moment of impact is shown in the War Disaster Movie,“The Bombardment“. The horror didn’t end there. Several bombers in the second and third wave attacked the burning school, mistaking it for their target.
