Keyword Cannibalizing Blog Post Deletion Case Study 2
The Facts
Carrot website on motivated seller template
Site was targeting a mid-size metro (~750k pop.)
Total of 399 blog posts on site when we took over
Assessment
Rankings were extremely "stuck" for pages that were actually indexed
Most rankings were stalling out at the bottom of page 1 or somewhere on page 2
Many city pages were not indexed at all
The site definitely needed a little more authority, and some on-page SEO tweaks, but it was VERY clear that the blog was "vampiring" all the potential from the site
Actions We Made
Setup Google Search Console to assess which blogs were crawled but not indexed
Ran Screaming Frog to show us all the on-page SEO data and give us a list of all the blog URL's
198 Carrot Content Pack blog posts were deleted
201 blog posts were left published because they didn't violate the keyword cannibalization rules
Deleted blog posts happened Jan 19, 2023
Resubmitted a new sitemap after the deletion of blog posts
Summary
Rankings have been moving up constantly since on-page SEO tweaks were made. Deletion of the Carrot content packs only accelerated this action.
A press release was distributed Jan 12 & citations were built Jan 15, both several days before the deletion of blogs.
We've done this enough times to know that the PR and citations do help, but they generally don't account for this type of rankings increase across the board.
However, good on-page SEO, can & does often have a larger impact.
On-page SEO continues to be by far, the most underrated SEO technique.
