One night, Hazrat Umar (RA), as was his routine, went out in disguise to see the condition of his people. As he passed by a house, he overheard a conversation between a mother and her daughter. The mother was telling the girl to mix water into the milk so they could sell more and earn extra money.
The daughter replied,
“Amir al-Mu’minin (Hazrat Umar) has forbidden mixing water in milk.”
The mother said,
“Umar is not here to see us.”
The girl responded,
“Even if Umar is not here, his God is watching us.”
Hazrat Umar (RA) was deeply impressed by the girl's honesty and fear of Allah. The next morning, he called his sons and said:
“Find out who that girl is. She is worthy of being in the household of Umar.”
Eventually, Hazrat Umar (RA) arranged the marriage of that girl with his son ‘Asim. From their lineage, a noble descendant was born — Umar ibn Abdul Aziz, one of the greatest and most just caliphs in Islamic history.
