Smallholder farmers in Balaka and Nkhotakota districts in Malawi are founding it increasingly difficult to deal with climate and other stresses. Those who somehow manage to navigate these risks and increase their yields often face high risks of isolation. The Ukama Ustawi (UU) Initiative, in collaboration with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), is helping empower more than 4,000 households practicing conservation agriculture (CA) through the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) — a community-led empowerment methodology that applies principles of inclusion to improve income, food security, technology adoption, and CA practices. GALS particularly enables participants to analyse their situation through a gender lens and develop gender-equitable, practical visions.
