Semiconductor detector is a nuclear detector that can detect particles like alpha particles, gamma radiation etc, but made from a semiconductor device like a pn junction diode.
Semiconductors are materials that have an intermediate band gap compared to metals and insulators.
A pn junction diode is made from a layer of n-type and p-type semiconductor. n-type semiconductors have majority charge carriers as electrons, and p-type has holes. It does not conduct in reverse bias. The pn junction diode in reverse bias, has a large depletion region, that acts as the detector.
When an external particle enters the depletion layer, it transfers energy and create large number of electron-hole pairs. Energy required to create electron-hole pair is usually around 3.5eV. The large number of electrons lead to a current pulse that s registered in some counter.
