This week in the first episode of Chapter 2 in the Ephemeris, Aphelion talks about the discovery of molecules 12 billion light years away, the source of the longest Gamma Ray Bursts in the Universe, and the constancy of gravity throughout the life of the Universe!!

First story of the week:

"The James Webb Space Telescope has detected the most distant molecules in the universe, located 12 billion light years away. The molecules found are similar to smoke, soot, or fog on Earth and were observed in light that traveled from the galaxy when the cosmos was less than 1.5 billion years-old [...] The technique used to get a closer look at the galaxy, discovered in 2013, is called gravitational lensing" (StudyFinds).

Second story of the week:

"Cutting-edge computer simulations combined with theoretical calculations are helping astronomers better understand the origin of some of the universe's most energetic and mysterious light shows—gamma-ray bursts, or GRBs. The new unified model confirms that some long-lasting GRBs are created in the aftermath of cosmic mergers that spawn an infant black hole surrounded by a giant disk of natal material" (Phys.org).

Third story of the week:
"According to a new study by the international Dark Energy Survey (DES) Collaboration, the nature of gravity has remained the same throughout the entire history of the Universe [...] So far, the DES Collaboration has measured the shapes of over 100 million galaxies, and the observations all match what General Relativity predicts. The good news is that Einstein’s theory still holds, but this also means that the mystery of Dark Energy persists for the time being."
